TED Video Privacy Settlement

You may qualify if you are in the United States and, between October 19, 2021 and July 14, 2026, you had a TED account and watched a pre-recorded video on TED.com or in TED's iOS or Android app. No proof is needed — you confirm eligibility on the claim form under penalty of perjury. Filing online requires the 8-digit Claim ID and 4-digit PIN from the notice TED sent; if you cannot find yours, the administrator's contact page is the route to get it.

Every class member automatically gets two free months of TED Membership, which the administrator values at at least $10, once they activate it. Instead of that, you can file a claim form and choose a $5.00 cash payment — which the administrator says is subject to a pro rata reduction if claims exceed the $350,000 cash cap — or donate that payment to TED. Choosing cash or the donation means you do not also get the free membership. Payment follows final approval.

A lawsuit alleged that TED shared account holders' video-viewing information with third-party service providers without their informed, written consent, in violation of the Video Privacy Protection Act. TED denies any wrongdoing and the court has not decided who is right; the parties agreed to settle (Sutton v. TED Foundation Inc., No. 1:23-cv-09219-DEH, S.D.N.Y., Judge Dale E. Ho). The court has entered an order granting preliminary approval, and TED has also agreed to add an affirmative consent option for U.S. account holders.
