Who may qualify
You may qualify if you were detained at Brooklyn Central Booking between April 8, 2017 and December 27, 2019, or at any Central Booking location between February 3, 2020 and March 1, 2023. No documentation of a loss is required, and the claim form has a route for people who never received a Notice ID and Confirmation Code.
What the settlement pays
The administrator states that eligible class members may receive up to $475 for each separate time they were held at a Central Booking facility during the class period — so more than one qualifying stay means more than one payment. Payment comes by check, or by PayPal, Venmo or Zelle if you pick that on the claim form, after the court grants final approval.
What happened
Three lawsuits, later consolidated, alleged that the conditions people were held in at New York City's Central Booking facilities were unlawful. The City of New York agreed to pay up to $21,500,000 into a settlement fund to resolve them (Capobianco, Brennan and Aboubakar v. The City of New York, Nos. 1:21-cv-06125, 1:19-cv-02054 and 1:20-cv-01716, E.D.N.Y.). The court has granted preliminary approval and published the order.
