Who may qualify
The class is defined by a snapshot date: you may qualify if, on April 14, 2025, you owned or leased — or had previously owned or leased — a covered Hyundai or Kia originally sold or leased in the U.S. or its territories. Recalled models are certain 2011–2013 Hyundai Sonatas and 2011–2012 Sonata Hybrids, 2010–2012 and certain 2013 Kia Fortes and Forte Koups, 2011–2012 and certain 2013 Kia Optimas, 2011 and certain 2012 Optima Hybrids, and 2011–2012 Kia Sedonas. Unrecalled models are certain 2011–2019 Hyundai Sonatas and Sonata Hybrids, 2018–2023 Konas and 2022–2023 Kona Ns, 2019–2021 Velosters, certain 2013 Kia Fortes and Forte Koups, certain 2013–2020 Kia Optimas, certain 2012–2016 Optima Hybrids, and 2014 Kia Sedonas. Eligibility is confirmed by VIN on the official site.
What the settlement pays
Eligible owners may claim reimbursement of out-of-pocket costs tied to the recall — rental cars, towing, childcare, repair costs and lost wages — plus a residual payment of up to $350 for recalled vehicles or up to $150 for unrecalled ones, and a 10-year warranty on parts installed during the recall.
What happened
A lawsuit alleged certain Hyundai and Kia vehicles carry ZF-TRW airbag control units vulnerable to electrical overstress, which could stop airbags and other safety features from deploying in a crash. The automakers agreed to a settlement to resolve the claims with no admission of wrongdoing (In re ZF-TRW Airbag Control Units, No. 2:19-ml-02905-JAK, C.D. Cal.).
How to file
You can file with the settlement administrator yourself, and it is free. The official settlement site is here.
Most people who may qualify for one settlement may qualify for others they have never heard of. Cashout checks the open settlements against a few questions, keeps the official filing page and the requirements for each match in one place, and reminds you before a deadline.
Cashout is not a law firm and is not the settlement administrator. Final eligibility and payment amounts are determined by the settlement administrator, not by Cashout. Amounts shown are what the administrator or the settlement documents have published; they are not a promise of payment. Filing directly with the official administrator is always free.
Checking which settlements may apply to you is free. Cashout membership is optional and is a subscription: a 3-day trial for $0 or $1.00 today, then $19.99 every month, renewing automatically until you cancel. Which of these applies to you, and the exact date of the first charge, are shown at checkout before you enter a card. You can cancel anytime from your dashboard.
